Diuretic

Diuretic foods and herbs increase urine production or are traditionally used to encourage fluid release. Ayurveda may use this action for excess Kapha or stagnation, but hydration, electrolytes, medications, and kidney health matter.

Diuretic foods and herbs increase urine production or are traditionally used to encourage fluid release. More urination is not automatically better and does not mean a food is cleansing the body.

Ayurveda may use light, bitter, pungent, or astringent qualities for heavy Kapha patterns, while too much fluid loss can aggravate Vata. Diuretic herbs can affect hydration, electrolytes, blood pressure, and medication levels. Kidney or heart disease, pregnancy, dehydration, prescription diuretics, blood-pressure medicines, or lithium require extra caution. New swelling, very low urine, shortness of breath, weakness, or confusion needs medical attention.
