Have you ever stood in the skin care aisle, overwhelmed by choices, hoping to find the one product that will finally make your skin feel whole?

For years, I was that person—reaching for new lotions, chasing quick fixes for dryness, itchy patches, and stubborn eczema. Nothing truly worked. It wasn’t until I discovered Ayurveda that I understood my skin for what it really is: a messenger.
Why Ayurveda? My Turning Point
Twelve years ago, I made a change that felt radical. I cut my chemically colored hair short and embraced my natural brown with its emerging threads of grey. It was symbolic and practical—freeing myself from years of harsh chemicals that had been leaching into my scalp and bloodstream for 40 years....WHOA!
Around the same time, I discovered the simple magic of coconut oil. I first began to use it on my short hair as a way to get my hair to fall into place. Then I began using it as my daily moisturizer; my skin finally felt nourished—not just for an hour, but deeply and consistently. The dry, flaky patches faded, and for the first time, I saw improvement that lasted.
But the biggest transformation wasn’t just what I put on my skin. It was what I put in my body.
From Fat-Free to Fully Nourished: The Inside-Out Shift

For decades, I followed Western nutrition advice—fat-free everything, low-calorie meals. My skin told a different story: one of depletion and imbalance.
Ayurveda taught me that healthy fats are essential for both body and mind. I started incorporating ghee, coconut oil, seeds, and other nourishing fats into my diet.
Daily oiling of my body became a ritual.
Now, my skin is rarely dry, even in winter. Eczema, once a summer visitor, is now rare. When it does appear, I know how to respond with food, rest, and care.
Ayurvedic Skin Care: Beyond the Surface
In Ayurveda, the skin is more than a surface. It is formed from the first two bodily tissues:
Rasa dhatu (lymph/plasma): The product of healthy digestion and hydration.
Rakta dhatu (blood): The carrier of heat, hormones, and emotion.
When digestion is weak or our diet is imbalanced, these tissues suffer—and the skin shows it. Dryness, breakouts, inflammation, and premature aging are all signs of inner imbalance.
Dosha Imbalances: What Is Your Skin Telling You?
Ayurveda teaches that each dosha expresses imbalance in the skin differently:
Dosha | Skin Signs of Imbalance |
Vata | Dryness, roughness, cracking, wrinkles |
Pitta | Inflammation, redness, rashes, acne |
Kapha | Oiliness, congestion, cystic acne |
Curious about your dosha? Try a simple self-check:
Vata: Do you often feel cold, dry, or anxious?
Pitta: Do you run hot, get irritated easily, or have sensitive skin?
Kapha: Do you tend to feel sluggish, have oily skin, or get congested?
Seasonal Eating for Radiant Summer Skin

In Ayurveda, the quality of our skin is a direct reflection of what we eat—because our tissues, including the skin, are built from the nourishment we digest. Summer, ruled by Pitta dosha, brings heat, intensity, and sometimes irritation. The foods we choose can help maintain internal coolness, calm, and hydration—especially if we know our dosha tendencies.
General Summer Guidelines
Favor cooling, hydrating, and slightly sweet, bitter and astringent foods.
Minimize overly spicy, oily, or fried dishes.
Stay well-hydrated with room-temperature or cool herbal teas (like mint, rose, or coriander).
Dosha-Specific Summer Eating Tips
Dosha | Best Foods & Practices | Avoid |
Vata | Hydrating and oily foods: cooked grains (rice, oats), ghee, avocados, sweet fruits; coconut water, warm almond milk, stewed peaches or pears | Raw salads, carbonated drinks, excess caffeine |
Pitta | Cooling foods: cucumbers, leafy greens, coconut, melons, mint, rose, cilantro; cooling spices like coriander, fennel, cardamom | Onions, garlic, fermented foods, tomatoes, hot spices, alcohol |
Kapha | Light, dry, and spicy foods: bitter greens, beans, berries, barley, steamed vegetables; warming spices like ginger, black pepper, turmeric | Heavy oils, dairy, fried or processed foods |
You don’t have to overhaul your diet overnight—even a few intentional shifts can support more balanced, vibrant skin from within.
What We Put on Our Skin Matters
Modern skin care is filled with chemicals you can't pronounce—many of which are endocrine disruptors. Ayurveda’s rule is simple: If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.
Natural oils are among the most healing substances for the skin:
Coconut oil: Cooling, ideal for Pitta and summer.
Sesame oil: Warming and grounding, perfect for Vata and winter.
Sunflower or mustard oil: Stimulating, good for Kapha types.
Each oil can be infused with herbs or essential oils for added benefit. The act of applying oil—abhyanga—is more than moisturization. It’s a ritual of self-love, calming the nervous system and helping us return to our bodies.
Some other fun things I put on my skin, is lemon and lime juice that is filled with Vitamin C to regenerate skin.
Honoring Your Natural Beauty
Letting go of hair dye and commercial beauty standards was liberating. I stopped hiding my greys and started seeing them as threads of wisdom. As Ayurveda reminds us, beauty isn’t about perfection—it’s about harmony.

My skin and hair now feel like a living expression of the choices I’ve made to nourish myself. The more I respect my body, the more radiant I feel.
Simplicity, Ritual, and Listening Inward
Your skin wants to be heard. It wants to be nourished, not overwhelmed. When we simplify our routines, tune into the seasons, and feed ourselves from the inside out, our skin responds.
If you’re still searching for the perfect lotion, try this: warm a little coconut oil in your hands, take a deep breath, and give your skin a moment of your full presence. It just might be the most healing thing you’ve done all day.
